New Forest Valais Blacknose Blog RSS

Goodbye & Thank you!

We purchased our first foundation flock of Valais Blacknose sheep in mid-2016 and have had the most amazing four + years breeding and showing this incredible breed of sheep.  We are hugely proud of the award-winning flock we built and bred over these years and have enjoyed meeting hundreds of like-minded people throughout this time. Exciting new beginnings… We both felt that the time was right for us to focus on new things and sadly part with our beloved flock of Valais Blacknose sheep; Abby is expecting her 2nd baby at the beginning of September and Emma has brought a beautiful herd of Llamas on to her farm which she’s started breeding this Summer. New Forest Eden Shines at the Blacknose Beauties Show in Carlisle 23rd - 24th August 2019!

We were so thrilled to see New Forest Eden, now owned by the amazing Valais Blacknose Sheep Snowdonia, do so well at the fantastic annual Valais Blacknose Sheep Society Blacknose Beauties show last weekend... Eden came 5th in her class of 18 shearling ewes, dropping only one point off scoring the coveted maximum points. We take so much pleasure seeing our sheep go on to thrive and do so well with their new owners - and none are more deserving of their success than Snowdonia. Huge congrats again guys on all your success at the show! 👏👏🏆

Success at the New Forest Show 2019!

Our flock came up trumps again at the New Forest Show in July 2019, winning a serious of prizes across multiple mixed breed classes: Our ewe lamb "New Forest Gabby" took 5th place in her large ewe lamb class, "New Forest Francis" took 5th place in two classes: Longwool Wool on the Hoof and the Shearling Ram class.  Finally, our Group of Three won 3rd place in another large mixed breed class. We were delighted with these results - the breed is so rare and we're still the only Valais Blacknose sheep entered into this Show so it's always great to win recognition of the quality of our stock, particularly when you're up against popular native meat breeds (often the polar...

A rare phenomenon when breeding Valais Blacknose sheep is that once in a blue moon (well, once in over 150 lambs, to be more exact...) you get what's called a 'Spitti' lamb, which is a purebred Valais Blacknose sheep, but with mostly black instead of white wool.  Some are almost entirely black and others, like our lamb, have attractive random splodges of black all over, a bit like a Jacob sheep. Not only is he a Spitti lamb, he's also a rare Type 2 genotype (ARR/ARQ) which refers to his resistance to Scrapie. So this makes him SUPER-RARE!  We have named our special Spitti lamb "New Forest Fosco" which means 'dark'.  Spittis can go on to breed perfectly marked offspring,...
